What is CSA?
CSA - Community Supported Agriculture
So what is Community Supported Agriculture all about? *
It’s an agreement between the grower and the eater to share the load of work, potential risks and the abundance of harvest.
The grower does the growing, knowing their supporters value their work, supporting independent small scale food production & have faith they can deliver tasty produce, week after week.
The eater supports the grower by paying in advance for their produce, allowing the grower to cover their supplies and reducing some of the financial pressure at the start of each growing round. It’s such a massive relief for the grower knowing they have their very own cheer squad wanting them to do well and the produce is already ordered prior to planting.
The movement began in Japan, in the early 1960s as a response to issues of food safety and urbanisation. In 1965, Japanese mothers who were concerned about food safety from imported and conventionally grown produce joined forces with farmers fearing the paving over of their farmland to create the first CSA programs.
What makes it worthwhile?
We grow using organic practices – happy soil, happy environment, happy people!
In essence…
Produce is wrapped in a reusable cloth square (Furoshiki), to be returned following week for reuse
It’s harvested the morning of pick up - all grown onsite in Woonona
You’ll receive a Monday email – announcing what’s in the upcoming wrap on Thursday
Contact free pick up in the nominated window of 11 - 6 pm (or by arrangement)
(Please let us know if you can’t make this window & we’ll work something out)
What to expect in a wrap:
There will be a variety of at least 5 crops, weighing in at least 2 kg. There’s enough variety to make a few meals from scratch or to add something locally grown to most meals. The wraps usually include:
Leafy salad greens
Cooking greens
Alliums ( of the onion family)
Root/ Fruit crop
Herbs
Are there any cons?
You may get ingredients you’re unfamiliar with occasionally; these will be covered in
the Monday note giving you the ingredients list.
There may be a rare bug – we do our best with washing and packing, but our team is small
We do our absolute best to provide abundance, however nature may have other
ideas and occasionally we may run the risk of under delivering.
We aim for vibrancy, variety and abundance of the seasons. If there’s something you really don’t like, please let us know and we’ll do our best to offer a substitute. If you will be away for any time over your subscribed round, you have the option of paying your share forward to a friend, family member or local non profit organisation or we can help find some one to purchase the share!
We only offer a subscription service, as we need to work out what we’re harvesting before it actually gets planted to maximise yield and minimise waste.
All our decisions are based around the ethics of permaculture –
Earth care – People care – Fair share
*We really appreciate your interest in the Community Supported Agriculture model.
Currently, the program is on hiatus as we are fine tuning some upcoming projects.
